Demonstrators calling for economic and political reform in Egypt broke through police barriers on January 25 in Cairo's streets [1]

Të nxitur nga revolta tuniziane [2] që para shumë kohe përzuri presidentin Ben Ali, qytetarët dhe aktivistët egjiptianë organizuan një protestë masive më 25 janar [3] duke bërë thirrje për reformë ekonomike dhe për mbarim të sundimit 30 vjeçar të presidentit Hosni Mubarak.  Shpresat ishin shume të mëdha ashtu siç ishte tendosja publike teksa mijëra njerëz protestonin në Kairo dhe në qytetet tjera, si dhe përpara ambasadave egjiptiane në shtetet tjera. Më 25 janar, Twitter u bllokua dhe linjat e telefonave celularë u ndërprenë, por lajmet për arrestime dhe represion nga ana e policisë ende qarkullonin onlajn (hashtag #Jan25 [4]).Megjithatë , në mëngjesin e 28 janarit edhe interneti ishte ndërprerë [5] në tërë Egjiptin, pak para fillimit të protestave të asaj dite.

Sipas The Christian Science Monitor [6], numri i të vdekurve sillet mes 74 (Reuters) dhe 108 (Al Jazeera). Disa u vranë nga të shtëna me eksplozivë. Qindra janë plagosur gjatë  përleshjeve me policinë.

25 janari është festë publike në Egjipt [7] që shënon përvjetorin e incidentit të vitit 1952 kur policia egjiptiane u bashkua me popullatën për ti rezistuar okupimit britanik.
